Jett Martin Launches Log Market App
Since graduating high school, Jett Martin has been working part-time at his family’s third-generation sawmill, Martin Brothers, in Greenup Kentucky. He mainly stacks lumber and observes how the business operates. His grandfather, Pete, started the company nearly 30 years ago and today his father, Brent, runs the business.
The 22-year-old has also spent the last year building an online platform to serve the forest products industry. Martin studied Information Technology and Cloud Computing at Ashland Community and Technical College, obtaining an associate’s degree in 2024. He’s currently enrolled in an online bachelor’s degree program, but since the startup of his business in 2025, he’s been focused on developing the JM Log Market app.
Saving the Bartlett Experimental Forest
On March 31, 2026, the USDA Forest Service announced a restructuring plan that would move its headquarters from Washington, DC, to Salt Lake City, Utah, and move regional offices to create a “state-based and service center model.” For the Northeast, that would mean a central office in Pennsylvania, and for the Lake States, an office in Madison, Wisconsin. The Forest Service also announced it would shut down research stations that serve 57 of the country’s 84 experimental forests and ranges. The announcement sent a shockwave throughout the vast community of forest workers and practitioners in the United States. Since then, there has been much discussion about what these closures would mean for
forest service staff, researchers, Americans, and the science that informs decisions about how to manage our forests.
NELA Wraps Up Another Loggers’ Expo
The Northeastern Forest Products Equipment Expo (a.k.a. Loggers’ Expo) brings together forestry professionals, loggers, equipment dealers, and anyone interested in the timber industry for two full days of exhibits, machinery displays, demos, and a celebration of excellence in the industry. This year, the event was held at the Champlain Valley Expo grounds in Essex Junction, Vermont, May 1-2. The show is a major event organized by the Northeastern Loggers’ Association (NELA).
